When I coach adults to children alike, I get a frequently asked question and it's always related to the uncertainty of the future. It's always along the lines of, "How do you know where you will be in the future?"

My answer always starts with "I don't know."

You must be thinking, "If I call myself a coach, how can you say you don't know? Shouldn't you know enough to give these lost souls a definite answer?"

The answer to this question is a definite "no." The more you understand life, the more you need to go with the flow and be fluid in your thinking, and most importantly, accept that change is imminent.

I consider myself a deep thinker who has lived enough to tell you this: You will never know the outcome of your future if you don't pursue it in the present moment. Being lost is not a bad thing, because, at that moment, you will be knocked off your footing—away from the grips of your ego—and learn to listen to the intuition within.

As a Chinese girl who grew up in Hong Kong, America, Japan and now Thailand, I have observed not only my mind and how it changed over the course of my life, but how people all over the world live their lives. The most peaceful people are the most accepting people. Peace means happiness and acceptance of life.

To all the people residing in the west who seek growth, success, financial stability or even fame, this is my advice for you. Stop seeking growth outside of yourself. As long as you seek gratification outside of yourself such as more money, a bigger title or more certifications, you will continue to seek and chase. You will never be able to find peace and stable happiness.

Here are the steps to help you grow toward a more peaceful life:

• Step 1: Be very honest with who you are.

• Step 2: Grow your self-awareness.

• Step 3: Aim to master your mind in order to grow your influence.

• Step 4: Start a diary and observe your own mental patterns.

• Step 5: Discover your narrative.

• Step 6: Grow courage by accepting your ego.

• Step 7: Rise above. Mend past strife by understanding self and reaching out to others.

• Step 8: Observe your own emotions and learn to feel them.

• Step 9: Accept and understand where your emotions came from.

• Step 10: Choose: Let go of all that no longer serves you or keep it, which could strengthen your ego and keep you in the cycle of suffering.

Having lived all over the world, especially with a clear lense between the western and eastern minds, I notice that everyone in life wants the same things. We all want happiness, love and peace but we search for it in different ways.

This can be applied to your professional life as well. No matter the power of your position, using the steps above can help you to better understand your staff's and colleagues' mentality because what you know within you can be applied to others. Meaning, for example, the more compassionate you are toward yourself, the more compassionate you can be with others.

Being aware of your own mind can teach you how to better communicate with your staff and colleagues because you are speaking with awareness. You are consciously speaking instead of just blurting words out and then reacting to others. When you are fully present while speaking with another, your conversation partner can grow empathy toward you, which in turn grows trust. Trust is the basis of all relationships and it can develop a more synergistic work environment for all with less mental resistance and more openness.

More often than not, most people live so fixed in their own perspective and ego that they are unable to see others' perspectives and therefore are blind to their own path. They become lost, blinded by all the distractions that society creates while keeping the same ways of thinking, hoping something miraculous will change. It will not.

Change must come from within you. Peace must be an action you take within to pursue. Joy must come from within.
